CIEE: Development & Globalization
Over the course of the semester, I will be conducting field research regarding Development, Environment, and Globalization. I will be fully immersed into the community, using my education to directly contribute to grassroots efforts. The program focuses on social justice and human rights, and I am unbelievably grateful to be a part of it!
The Courses I will be taking at Khon Kaen University (KKU):
The Human Perspective on Development and the Environment:
The Human Perspective on Development and the Environment is the “core course” that stretches through the first three months of the program. It is typically divided into four to six units, examining such issues as agriculture/food systems, forestry and land rights, local water resource management, and mining/ development in the Northeast.
Social Research Methods:
Alongside the core course is the Social Research Methods course that provides background lectures on Thai society, research methods, and a series of workshops, most prominently a number of journalism workshops.
Directed Research/Field Study Practicum:
This course begins in the last month of the program. Project possibilities come from communities, local NGOs, past student groups, and sometimes from students themselves. Students, working in groups, consult with community leaders or other experts in creating and then presenting a project proposal for review before staff and their peers. Final presentations of student projects wrap up the semester.
Beginning Thai I (Once a week I will be paired with a Thai tutor for extra help! *_Relief_*)
I will be in Thailand for the annual Songkran Festival! The entire country celebrates with the traditional throwing of water to "cleanse the bad away".
I will also be there for the Chinese Lunar New Year (Feb. 19)
